A truly special car. My grandfather bought this brand new from Volkswagen of Ashford (UK) in 1989, and when they emigrated to NZ in it came with them. He daily drove it until 2010, and there it sat in the garage, gathering dust. Come the end of 2021, I was determined to get it alive, road worthy and bringing joy to many. With a fair amount of servicing and repair, and the help of Sutherland Performance in Wellington - just in time for Christmas 2021, it was road worthy and hitting the streets! The immense 66hp 1.8L 8v 4cyl motor paired with VW's magic 5 speed 020 gearbox makes for an enjoyable and engaging drive. Open the sunroof and cruise round in what is arguably the coolest hot hatch of the 1980s, the one that everyone wanted.
